- Murder Garden - An undercover sting operation into an auto theft ring not only leads authorities to shady business at night, but reveals a horrific facade of far worse things imaginable. - Bog Fiends - A reporter is hired to document a secret project on an undisclosed island. Unfortunately, everything he sees and hears surrounding the shore-water swamp becomes a journalist’s worst nightmare. From 1961 to 1976, World Cinema Group produced low budget monster and exploitation films. This collection is now a new series of pulp/dime store novellas published by non-other than Encyclopocalypse Publications. The double feature of shock and terror, Murder Garden and Bog Fiends, come from the twisted mind of author Bret Nelson. Murder Garden provides an upfront and frightful experimentation of human behavior. All the syringes and vials of unknown fluids within these pages have a mad scientist vibe. Although an unusual flower farm of suspicious soil is the focus, it’s a maniacal character bestowing the backbone of flesh, brain and neural pathways to this absorbing storyline. Be it restraints, injections or the strange jars aligned on the shelves, prepare yourself for a continuous unsettling feeling of dread. Bog Fiends are the things monster movies are made of. One of the cornerstones to horror sub-genres belong to the creature feature. These aquatic savage predators play a prominent role in this secret-urban-planning gone terribly wrong. The raft in the middle of infested waters aspect (check), the small group of isolated survivors element (check), and Mother Nature’s vengeance factor (check). I mean, what’s not to like about this eerie unearthly tale of evolution.
Before I leave this review, I would like to share my favorite quote from this book describing a violent specimen…they are like “Moles from Hell, who want to eat your face!” That alone is worth the price of admission. A five caution tape Horror Bookworm Recommendation.
