Author M.D. Labelle is the one being held responsible for this little spooktacular sideshow of horrific entertainment. With the purchase of a single ticket, the reader is allowed entrance to this carnival of carnage. Psychotic performers along with lions, elephants, bears and other “bizarre creatures,” are all guided by Vladimir The Ringmaster. I have to say, this is not your ordinary big top. The thunderous audience applause mixed with the inhuman tearing of cartilage and flesh makes this a feeding frenzy of dark fiction for the reader. Labelle knows how to lay the groundwork of scary occurrences all the while building an eerie menace of painted evil faces. Mixed with genuine thrills and suspense, The Circus holds a creepiness level of the highest disturbing standards. I was pleasantly surprised by the sub-plots of personal agendas and unique spitefulness provided by the towns characters. These ominous undoings are held only second to a certain little “Needful Things” town located in Castle Rock, Maine. Inhumane actions that Labelle’s circus brings to town cleverly distorts the storyline into an unputdownable (because it’s that good) novella.
