These circumstances lead to a development of evil intentions, greedy “vultures” and confrontations that are of the unknown. The Ballad Of Seven Bastards by Peter Caffrey is a piece of old west brutality and savagery. The time period setting of western darkness is a perfect backdrop for the insane characters of rugged individualism that only Caffrey can concoct. Among the cringeworthy images of vengeance, assaults and witchery is a plethora of dog-eat-dog incantations. When it comes to character development, Caffrey has taken a page out of the George R.R. Martin book of unpredictability. The Ballad Of Seven Bastards brings new meaning to “dead man walking”…literally. Intense, sadistic and a unique atmosphere of gloom and doom, Peter Caffrey has successfully created a black void of uneasiness. Many violent violations seem to hang within the ominous clouds of this harsh wilderness. I can always appreciate a story with despair as its main character, because there is a greater appreciation for the positive aspects and a reflection on life, loss and what truly matters. The appeal for me is that Caffrey allows us readers to explore the ungodly suffering of retribution without the anxiety and stress of real-life tragedies. There is a brilliant method to his madness. 
Several harsh realities I took away from The Ballad Of Seven Bastards…”not believing in something doesn’t make it any less real” and “you reap what you sow.” Both justified and inevitable in the ruthless world that Peter Caffrey has created.
